Don't teachers get paid for holidays?
Question
In connection with the New Year holiday, teachers will rest for 5 consecutive days. Will our December and January salaries decrease due to these holidays?
Response
Today, many educators are asking whether their salaries will be reduced due to the holidays before the New Year.
As is known, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan signed a decree in 2026 on the establishment of additional non-working days during the celebration of official dates and the postponement of weekends.
- According to the decree, in 2025 for all employees (regardless of the type of work week) December 31 - Wednesday;
- In 2026, for all employees (regardless of the type of work week), January 2 - Friday, and for employees with a six-day work week - January 3 - Saturday are designated as non-working days.
The days off are set as follows
- December 31 (Wednesday);
- January 1 (Thursday);
- January 2 (Friday);
- January 3 (Saturday);
- January 4 (Sunday).
According to part 4 of Article 249 of the Labor Code, employees are paid according to time-based, piece-rate, or other criteria provided for in the remuneration system.
At the same time, in the time-based system of remuneration, monthly wages are not reduced due to additional days off. For example, whether a teacher works 22 working days or 20 working days during 1 month, their monthly salary will not decrease.
What about the salaries of teachers who work hourly?
In the piece-rate system of remuneration, wages may decrease due to additional days off. Because in this case, employees are paid based on work norms (time norms).
According to Article 277 of the Labor Code, in the piece-rate system of remuneration, prices are determined based on the established work grades, wage grades, tariff rates (salary), and work norms (time norms).
The piece-rate price is determined by dividing the daily tariff rate or hourly tariff rate corresponding to the category of work performed by the daily or hourly work rate. The piece-rate price can also be determined by multiplying the daily tariff rate or hourly tariff rate corresponding to the category of work performed by the established daily or hourly time norm.
The daily tariff rate (salary) or hourly tariff rate is determined by dividing the monthly tariff rate or official salary corresponding to the wage category by the monthly norm of working days or working hours.
For example, in the field of education, hourly wages depend on the number of hours taught by the teacher. That is, the salary of teachers conducting hourly lessons will depend on the number of hours taught. Therefore, the salaries of teachers who teach hourly classes may be reduced due to additional days off.
