A portion of the funds illegally misappropriated by Gulnara Karimova from Switzerland has been returned to Uzbekistan.

This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, Otabek Fozilkarimov, at a press conference in Almalyk on April 24th.

At the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, illegal assets seized in Switzerland are being directed to the healthcare and education sectors.

On August 16, 2022, a restitution agreement was signed between Uzbekistan and Switzerland.

Within the framework of this agreement, the Republic of Uzbekistan, Switzerland, and the UN established the "Trust" Fund under the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund.

Within the framework of the agreement, an agreement was reached on the return of $131 million for the first tranche.

In particular, at the expense of the "Ishonch" Foundation, work in the field of education is being carried out in two components. According to the first, a project to increase educational opportunities through the expansion of information technologies and digital solutions has been launched.

Based on the second component, together with international organizations, a project proposal has been developed aimed at improving the sanitary and hygienic system in schools, modernizing the heating system, and involving the public in school management.

"In this regard, we welcome the return of illegally confiscated funds in the territory of Switzerland in the interests of the people of Uzbekistan.

"We express our gratitude to the representatives of all international organizations contributing to this agreement and social projects," the press service of the ministry said.
