In Finnish schools, students are given free lunch

Students of primary and secondary schools, gymnasiums and vocational education institutions in Finland have the opportunity to receive a hot meal for lunch during the school day absolutely free of charge.

This tradition has deep roots and was established by law more than a hundred years ago. Today, school lunches are one of the main principles of education and student care.

If children attend early morning school activities or extended day groups, light breakfasts are also offered.

Finland was the first in the world to adopt a law guaranteeing school lunches for students in 1943. Since 1948, free meals have been provided to all school-age students.

Meals in Finnish schools are varied and balanced. The age, health, height and development of students are taken into account when choosing the type of school meals. A school lunch consists of a hot meal, salad, chopped fresh vegetables or fruit, buttered bread and a drink.

During the preparation of the menu, national, seasonal and local products are taken into account. The menu is developed together with students and school staff. Pupils themselves can also participate in the preparation of lunch during the time of helping the pupils of the junior class or getting acquainted with the work of the staff during the internship.
